Legislation
All persons who hold a firearms licence or permit must comply with the general legislative requirements of the Firearms Act 1996 and the Firearms Regulation 2006. Similarly, all persons who hold a prohibited weapon permit must comply with the general legislative requirements of the Weapons Prohibition Act 1998 and the
Weapons Prohibition Regulation 2009.
To assist licence and permit holders in identifying and complying with these legislative requirements, documents outlining the obligations of a licence or permit holder have been made available on the Authority and Conditions page on the Firearms Registry Internet site:
- General Legislative Requirements Firearms Licence Holder
- General Legislative Requirements Firearms Permit Holder
- General Legislative Requirements Prohibited Weapon Permit Holder
In addition to the general legislative requirements, a licence or permit holder has specific conditions which must be met, depending on the category licence or genuine reason for obtaining the licence, or the type of permit held.
Firearm and prohibited weapon permit holders receive a copy of the authority and conditions specific to their permit type once the permit has been issued. Firearms permits issued as a permit card at the RTA do not receive a copy of the authority and conditions. However, the authority and conditions for these RTA produced permits are published on the Authority and Conditions page on the Firearms Registry Internet site.
Licence holders should familiarise themselves with the specific requirements relating to a particular licence category, licence class or genuine reason by referring to the relevant sections of the Firearms Act 1996 and the Firearms Regulation 2006.
